Skin-Cancer Types
Mouth cancer (also called oral cancer) is a disease in which malignant (cancerous) cells form in the tissues of the mouth. The mouth contains many different types of tissue, including cells that line the inside of the lips and cheeks, taste buds, gums, tongue, palate and floor of the mouth. These tissues can become cancerous.
Most mouth cancers are squamous cell carcinomas and tend to be found in the upper part of your mouth, including your lips and cheeks.
It is important to know the signs and symptoms of mouth cancer, so that you can get proper treatment as early as possible. Common symptoms include:
● Painful mouth ulcers that don't go away within a few weeks.
● A lump or thickening in the lining of your mouth, cheek, tongue or gums.
● Changes in the color or texture of your tongue, lips or gums.
● Difficulty swallowing, chewing, or moving your jaw.
● Sometimes, white or red patches on the lining of the mouth or tongue can be an early sign of oral cancer
There are several risk factors that can increase your chances of developing mouth cancer, including:
● Drinking alcohol excessively
● Smoking tobacco products
● Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV)
● A family history of mouth cancer or other oral cancers (such as pharyngeal or laryngeal)
● A diet high in salt or low in fruits and vegetables
● Having poor oral hygiene habits or a history of gum disease
