Skin-Cancer Types
Cheek cancer is a rare form of cancer that affects the face. It is most common in older adults, but it can also affect younger people.
The main types of cheek cancer are squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and sebaceous gland carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma accounts for about 70% of all cases, while basal cell carcinomas account for around 25%. Sebaceous gland carcinomas are very rare and make up only 5% of cases.
Cheek cancer usually affects the lymph nodes in your neck and jaw area, as well as the salivary glands. In some cases, cheek cancer doesn't cause any symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage. In other cases, symptoms may include:
● A lump or swelling near your jawline or neck
● Ulcerations on your tongue or mouth
● Tenderness when you touch or move your jaw
● Pain or discomfort in your face that doesn't go away with painkillers
The exact cause of cheek cancer is not known, but certain factors may increase your risk for developing it. These include:
● Tobacco use of any kind, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and snuff
● A weakened immune system
● Excessive sun exposure to your lips
● Heavy alcohol use
